The Forestry Commission says 38 000 hectares of woodlots have been lost in Matabeleland North Province due to veld fires.

Matabeleland North Province has this year recorded  worrying statistics of destroyed land due to veld fires with preliminary indications in August having shown that 112 000 hectares of woodlots were destroyed in these environmental fires.

Thousands of dollars in potential revenue have also been lost.

The challenge of veld fires has become a perennial problem in the country, with vast tracts of land and property being lost in these environmental disasters.

National statistics put the figures at 1.2 million hectares of destroyed habitat and the Forestry Commission continues to urge the public to embark on sustainable environmental management practices to ensure that the country’s flora and fauna is preserved.
