parly meeting.jpgThere was an uproar in the House of Assembly this Tuesday as legislators disagreed on who is responsible for the rampant corruption in local authorities despite agreeing on the need to get rid of the scourge that has become synonymous with the MDC-T led councils.

The MDC-T legislators accused the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo of fuelling corruption in the local authorities.

The legislators alleged that the Minister meddles too much in council affairs while their Zanu-PF counterparts took a swipe at the breed of MDC-T councillors running the affairs of many urban councils.

It was however the mover of the motion, Zengeza East MDC-T legislator, Mr Alexio Masundire, who reminded the august house of his party’s tendency for violence by hinting that Minister Chombo should be removed from office violently for what he called interference in council.

The remarks angered Zanu-PF legislators, who took turns to highlight how Minister Chombo has done his job professionally by weeding off corrupt elements within the councils in adherence to set laws.

Many MDC-T run urban councils have been accused of corruption and poor service delivery.

These include the Bindura, Rusape, Redcliff, Chitungwiza and Harare councils among others.

Minister Chombo has intervened to protect residents by suspending implicated councillors.

Recently, councillors in Bindura called for his intervention in dealing with the town’s mayor who has also been accused of gross maladministration and corruption.
