A reckless Harare commuter omnibus driver who hit and killed a pedestrian while fleeing from the police four months ago has been slapped with a 4-year jail term.
Luckmore Tembo (28) appeared before Harare Magistrate Ms Ruramai Chitumbura who convicted him for culpable homicide and jailed him for four years.
The state represented by Mr Isheunesu Mhiti successfully proved Tembo’s guilt.
On the 20th of February around 11 am this year, Tembo was allegedly driving a Toyota Hiace along Nelson Mandela when on approaching the intersection of Nelson Mandela and Chinhoyi Street trying to evade police details, he stopped and reversed along a One Way.
In the process, he hit the now deceased Tecla Waladi who was crossing Nelson Mandela Avenue.
Instead of stopping he continued reversing while the deceased was underneath his vehicle.
This is despite calls from pedestrians flagging him to stop.
Tembo sped off from the scene and later dumped his vehicle before escaping on foot.
He was once convicted of a similar offence in 2011 when he killed a pedestrian while driving another kombi.
Ms Chitumbura initially slapped Tembo with 5 years imprisonment before suspending one year.
She additionally prohibited him from driving all motor vehicles in respect of Class 1, cancelled his license and ordered him to US$600 for his failure to stop and report an accident and driving a public vehicle without a defensive certificate and medical certificate.
