Government says the support given to communities in the Shurugwi and Tongogara areas is an important template of how companies must impart to communities’ empowerment.
While touring a school project in the Ruchanyu area in Tongogara rural district, Midlands Province Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Owen Ncube was shown a secondary school built with the assistance of the Anglo-American owned platinum mining company, Unki.
The staff at the school narrated to the minister how the facility has offered a lifeline to communities.
Minister Ncube also heard of challenges from the previous government which used to throw spanners into the completion of community projects in order to score cheap political points.
He however told both the community and the mining company representatives that such important projects must be highlighted so the people know how national resources are being used to benefit them too.
Ruchanyu Secondary School is serving communities in remote farms.
Prior to that, children from the area would walk over 14 kms to and from school everyday to access secondary education.
