Mr Mupamhanga led a group of government officials for a site visit at the dam.

He said the dam is a national project and work is underway to ensure that sooner than later people start benefiting from this resource.

“Surely it is not right that we have all this water going to waste. I brought the permanent secretaries so that they appreciate and visualise what we want to do,” said Mr Mupamhanga.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development Engineer Gloria Magombo said a private developer has already been licensed to put up a 15 megawatt power plant.

“A lot of work has already been done in terms of the power plant,” Engineer Magombo said.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Mr Munesushe Munodawafa said the dam also provides good investment for the tourism sector, a factor that must be considered by setting land aside.

The Minister of State for Masvingo Province Cde Ezra Chadzamira also said it is critical for the Tokwe project to come to fruition.

Close to 30 000 hectares are expected to be irrigated using water from the dam once infrastructure has been laid.
