tobacco.jpgThe Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) has commended the tobacco industry for the progress achieved in 2010 which saw the industry raking in US$ 340 million as output of the golden leaf increased by more than 100%.

 
The ZFU described the tobacco industry as one of the pillars of the agriculture sector after an impressive run in which output twice surpassed the season target which was initially pegged at 77 million kilograms to reach 123 million kilogrammes.

ZFU agronomist, Mr. Albert Mutasa said the tobacco crop has been a success, boosting agriculture capacity by 70%.

The industry which had only 2000 farmers in 2008 recorded growth, with farmers rising to 29 thousand in 2009 and over 52 000 farmers in 2010.
