The tobacco marketing season officially opens next week on Wednesday with the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) saying it is all systems go.

However, auctioneers have requested the government to intervene in exempting the 2 percent tax on the industry as it will be pushed to the farmers.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement today heard submissions from tobacco industry players on their state of preparedness ahead of the 2019 season and dismissed the TIMB after instructing the body to bring relevant requested documents which include audited financial statements and tender documents for the construction of board’s headquarters.
