It was family fun day with lots of thrills and spills during the finals of this year’s edition of the ‘The Chinese Ambassador’s Cup – China – Zimbabwe table tennis friendly match at the Belvedere Technical Teachers training college in Harare.
Although the tournament was supposed to be a friendly match, the rivalry was there for all to see especially between the top seed in the singles.
The crowd was fantastic as it cheered every good move and often broke into song whenever victory was sensed.
Players played well-calculated games and picking each opponent’s weaknesses and making the most of timeouts whenever one was losing momentum.
Both singles final matches went into the best of five as the players stretched each to the limit. Zimbabwe’s top seed, Vickram Singh beat Wang Liping 3-1 in the men’s singles finals in a major upset.
In the women’s singles, defending champion, Zhang Yang beat Zimbabwean top seed, 19-year-old and Midlands State University psychology student, Vimbai Nicole Makuvaza 3-1 to retain her title.
The men’s team match was won by Zimbabwe while the women’s team match was won by China.
The table tennis players were very skilful and tactful, highlighting how the game of table tennis has grown in the country.
The tournament, which began in 2016, is meant to promote sporting exchanges and strengthen co-operation between China and Zimbabwe.
The China-Zimbabwe table tennis friendly match is hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe and co-organised by the Zimbabwe Chinese Table Tennis Association and the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union.
It is sponsored by local companies and Chinese communities in Zimbabwe.
