koran.jpgAnti-American demonstrations are underway in the Afghan cities of Kabul and Jalalabad over the burning of copies of the Koran by NATO troops.

One person was wounded and five others detained after troops fired shots at protesters who had gathered outside an American military base in Kabul.

Yesterday, the United States Commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, apologised after soldiers put copies of the Koran in an incinerator at Bagram Airbase.

Reports say the Korans were seized after soldiers at the base suspected Taliban prisoners of using the books to send messages.

Officials at the American Embassy in Kabul say the offices have been closed and all travel suspended.
