housing coorperatives 21-09-10.jpgThe Harare City Council in conjunction with a local NGO will soon begin the construction of flats in Mbare under The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation initiative to provide accommodation to the homeless and low income families.

The city council partnership with Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation to provide housing for the homeless and low income families has been given a new lease of life with the unveiling of a 7 tonne tipper lorry under the auspices of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s US$5 million grant.

The project will see flats being built in Mbare and other high density suburbs.

Harare Mayor, Mr. Muchadei Masunda said the initiative will help decongest the Mbare flats.

Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation representatives, Ms Beth Chitekwe Biti and Sekai Chiremba said the project is expected to reduce the number of people on the council’s waiting list.

The truck will be used to carry bricks and building materials to the site.

The number of people on the City of Harare waiting list stands at between 600 000 to a million.
