american soldier.jpgThe American soldier suspected of killing 16 civilians last week in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province, whose name had previously been kept a secret, has been identified as Staff Sergeant Robert Bales.

Bales, who is aged 38, was deployed in Afghanistan in December last year and is believed to have been trained as a sniper and had served several missions abroad.

He was initially being held in military custody overseas following the incident, but was reported on Friday to be enroute to a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Last year, also in March, another soldier of the Stryker Brigade was sentenced to 24 years in prison for killing three Afghan civilians.
