Sugar beans farmers in Middle Sabi have partnered local seed houses to mitigate against inputs and marketing challenges while in the process increase their profit margins.
Contract farming can offer many benefits to farmers including guaranteed markets and enhanced productivity.
Faced with challenges of inputs and markets, Middle Sabi sugar beans farmers have shifted to contract farming and are growing sugar cane seed that is more lucrative.
“Previously we had challenges in accessing inputs as well as a ready market. Due to improved supply of inputs we are looking forward for a bumper harvest. Contract farming for seed beans has better returns than commercial produce,” said one of the farmers.
The farmers say contract farming removes challenges of middle men who swindle them with exploitative prices that leave them vulnerable as producers.
