The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has stepped up efforts for the 2017 Youth Education through Sport (YES) festival set for Gweru from the 7th to the 11th of December.

SRC corporate development officer, Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said it is their responsibility to create a well rounded sporting personality cognisant of critical life skills hence the festival.

The annual event targets under 15 boys and girls athletes.

It provides them with a platform to debate on life issues through peer education and engage in community projects.

A total of about 1000 athletes across the country’s ten provinces are expected at this year’s event.

Previous editions have seen athletes participating in four sporting codes, football, volleyball, athletics and netball and indications are that this year’s edition might increase other sporting codes in line with the sports policy.

The festival which coincides with the national tree planting is also a barometer to measure readiness of the Midlands to stage the next revised Zimbabwe National Youth Games.
