Eight schools took part in the 2017 SOS Herman Gmeiner invitational U9 soccer tournament for boys and girls with calls for the promotion of children to participate in sport being highlighted.

The event that celebrated its fifth year of existence saw an increase in the number of participating teams from the original four to eight.

These included McKeurten, Hillside Junior, Khumalo, Henry Low, Hugh Beadle, Newman’s Ford, Eatc and the hosts SOS.

Speaking on the sidelines of the football action, the host school’s sports director, Pardon Gandandzara and girls coach, Precious Gumede spoke highly of the need to give the budding players an opportunity to shine in the field of play.

In the girls category, McKeurten were too powerful for SOS, steam rolling past them with a comfortable 2-0 scoreline while a penalty shootout saw SOS beating Hillside Junior 3-2 in the boys final after the two sides had been deadlocked 1-all.
