A solo motivational play titled, “Narratives from the Dark” has premiered at Theatre in the Park making it the first solo theatrical production in the country to feature a visual impaired actress.
‘Narrative from the Dark’ is a play based largely on the real life story of Edith Masango who is visually impaired and plays the sole role of the character of Gwen.
Gwen poses a lot of questions about the unfairness and segregation meted to people living with disabilities in societies as she faces a cruel world when she gets blind at the age of 20 after being affected by a hereditary ailment.
Masango who is a receptionist at a local film production house said she hopes to inspire people with different abilities while trying to change societal perceptions on how they view them.
Play writer and producer, Major Special Matarirano said the inspirational piece is aimed at changing the perception of society about people of different abilities commonly referred to a ‘people living with disabilities.’
Theatre in the Park director, Davies Guzha said the production is historic for the country and will impact positively on how society relate to what they call ‘people living with disabilities’.
In the play, Gwen tries to change the mentality of many and treats life as a battle of wills in order for her to claim place within a society that looks negatively at people with disabilities.
