Small scale miners have urged government to speed up the process of granting mining certificates as this is contributing heavily to gold leakages.
The granting of gold mining licences by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development seems to be occurring at a snail pace, forcing prospective applicants to operate without the documents.
These are sentiments shared by the Director of Silver Jackal Mine Mr Likhanukani Shoko.
As miners, we are concerned at the rate at which licences are being given. We are a key sector capable of driving the economy,” said Mr Shoko.
A snap survey conducted by the ZBC News at Yorks Business Centre showed that some miners have gone for over a year operating without legal documentation.
The miners say in the absence of the licences they cannot access funding and too often opt to sell their output at the illegal market.
