job sikhala.jpgFormer MDC legislator Job Sikhala has denied launching a political party MDC 99.

Sikhala who is facing charges of contravening some sections of Public Order and Security Act (POSA) told Harare Magistrate that he had a meeting in which he planned having a congress in December where he is supposed to launch his party.

Sikhala alleged that the media sensationalise the whole idea.

Sikhala’s lawyer Mr Gift Nyandoro said the charges are a victimisation of an innocent super democrat.

Meanwhile, Sikhala has applied for refusal of further remand.

Charges against Sikhala arose after he allegedly held a public meeting without notifying the police.

Former MDC member of the house of assembly for St Mary’s constituency Job Sikhala launched a new political party named MDC – 99 on 8 May 2010.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch the party’s National Secretary for Information and Publicity Aaron Muzungu said MDC 99 came about after the realisation that the two MDC formations led by Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai and Professor Arthur Mutambara are digressing from the founding principles of the original MDC party.

Muzungu claimed Job Sikhala who is President of MDC 99 formed the original MDC in 1999 together with the late Learnmore Jongwe and Tafadzwa Musekiwa, and that is why the new party has decided to maintain the name MDC, adding the year the original party was formed.
