Mehluli Sibanda overcame Emile Hudd of Great Britain in straight sets to win the first leg of the ITF tennis 18 and under final tournament at Harare Sports Club today.
Sibanda showed mental toughness in the first set which went to a tie break before dominating in the second set with a commanding 6-1 win.
The 7-6, 6-1 victory capped off a remarkable week for Sibanda who will now be looking forward to the second leg.
Sibanda’s opponent from Great Britain Hudd commended his opponent for a good match despite his defeat.
In the girls category Destinee Martins needed 3 sets to dismiss Canada’s Tiffany Lagarde 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
ITF action is set to continue as focus shifts to the second leg.
