Deputy Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Republic Police responsible for human resources Levi Sibanda has expressed concern over the rising crime in general in Manicaland and challenged police officers to sharpen their crime prevention strategies.
Addressing senior police officers in Manicaland who gathered in Mutare for the belated end of year celebration, Deputy Police Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Levi Sibanda said the increase in general crime is a major concern.
Stock theft cases went up by 9 percent with armed robbery cases shooting to 52 percent.
D CG Sibanda said in line with the increase in general crime rate, there is need for police officers in Manicaland to sharpen crime prevention strategies and jealously guard life and property .
He called for close collaboration between the police and the public in fighting crime.
DCG Sibanda also expressed concern over the increase in road traffic accidents which rose by 9 percent and called police and other road regulatory authorities to enhance traffic awareness campaigns.
Officers were implored to abide by the highest standard of discipline and desist from all forms of corruption.
Despite the increase in general crime, Manicaland Province managed to reduce some crimes of concern particularly murder which went down by 35 percent, rape for adult declined by 33 percent with that of juvenile recording a 5 percent decline respectively.
