The opening session of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme 2017 intercessional meeting was marred by sharp differences among member states.
The meeting was adjourned twice as organisational issues came to the fore after China questioned the credibility and eligibility of some participants.
The Kimberley Process chairman Mr Robert Owen Jones tried to override issues raised by China but to no avail until the meeting was adjourned.
When the meeting resumed, Zimbabwe head of delegation Minister of Mines and Mining Development Cde Walter Chidhakwa reminded members that outstanding issues raised by China needed to be attended to saying even the KP logo being used does not represent the diamond family.
The point of order by Minister Chidhakwa got support from African countries who called for further adjournment of the meeting until a consensus is reached on the way forward.
The disagreements at the intercessional meeting have discredited the KP chair with regards to the European Union and the Civil Society Coalition who have been pushing for reforms of the diamond regime.
