A pregnant woman has died at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital in Harare in an alleged case of neglect by hospital staff.
Two lives lost, a family aggrieved but the story could have been different if due attention was given amid allegations of negligence at Parirenyatwa’s Mbuya Nehanda Hospital.
An investigation that is underway may not bring Sharon Munyonho and her baby back, but the family led by Sharon’s sister Plaxedes is not giving up, hoping they can help protect other women from going through the same ordeal.
Some of the patients who gave an account of what transpired did not want to reveal their identity for fear of victimisation.
“I heard one of the doctors being told that there is a patient who needs an operation, but the doctor said he had other things to do,” said one eyewitness.
“She was in the next room, she said to me she had to be induced so she was being given medication on intervals, but when she started feeling pain at around 2am none of the nurses came through to assist her, I went to speak to her, all I could say was God will be with you,” another witness said.
An autopsy was done this Tuesday morning in the presence of a police forensic photographer and a medical doctor of the family’s choice but results could not be announced due to the ongoing investigation.
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals Public Relations Officer, Mr Lainos Dhire confirmed in a statement that they received a report on the case of a patient who died following a suspected rapture of the uterus adding that they are currently carrying out investigations.
