The Deputy Director for Reproductive Health in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Margaret Nyandoro said women who abort or lose their pregnancies through miscarriage should immediately go for post abortion care to receive the necessary treatment as abortion is amongst the top 5 causes of maternal deaths.

She said 5.8% of maternal deaths in Zimbabwe are a result of abortion complications.

“Women must go for post abortion care when they have had an abortion to clean up the uterus. There are several causes of abortion such as the complications of the pregnancy,” Nyandoro said.

The Executive Director of the Women and AIDS Support Network, Mary Sandasi says women should not shy away from going for post abortion care.

“Abortion is criminalised here in Zimbabwe, which is a reason why most women are afraid of seeking medical attention. Abortion can be induced or naturally happen if the body of the women is weak and it is important for women to receive this service,” said Sandasi.

The Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1977 makes it an offence for a woman to commit abortion.

There are several cases where an abortion can be legalised, such as rape, or when the pregnancy endangers the life of women.

In Zimbabwe, it is estimated that between 60 000 to 80 000 unsafe abortions are recorded every year.
