mbira3.jpgArtists from various disciplines have urged school children to take up arts seriously and to develop their artistic skills as arts are a source of livelihood.

A host of local artists from different genres recently visited Rio Tinto Mhondoro High School on a tour of the school’s Arts  Centre.

The artists imparted their expertise and strongly encouraged the school pupils to invest in and develop their artistic talents as they can prove to be a source of livelihood.

The artists who included music superstars Oliver Mutukudzi and Alick Macheso,  Script writer and drama producer Agnes Gwatiringa, Author Virginia Phiri, Poet Albert Nyathi and female sculptor Agnes Nyanhongo.

The National Arts Council hailed the Ministry of Education, Sport, Art and Culture’s regulations on art and culture programmes in schools.

School Head, Mrs. Chiedza Moyo said the visit was beneficial to the school as it would projected the artists lives as they have already expanded their curriculum through the establishment of the Arts Center and in line with government policy which states that all schools should have an arts and culture department to deal with those issues.

The Arts Centre was officially opened last year and is aimed at encouraging and promoting the school’s pupils to involve themselves and explore the various artistic genres. The artists visit was facilitated by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe.
