Marondera’s Chemhondoro Primary School head, who was accused of having connived with the school bursar to burn the school office to conceal cases of mismanagement, has been jailed for five years after being convicted of malicious damage to property.
The Acting Headmaster, Mr Douglas Matonzi (55) has been sentenced to five years in prison of which six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour by Murewa magistrate, Chiedza Gadzi.
According to the state led by Public Prosecutor Panganai Chiutsi, Matonzi and his co-accused, Tendai Zambezi, who has also been convicted of the same offence, are alleged to have connived to set the school office on fire to conceal cases of mismanagement.
Following a visit to the school by government auditors in January this year, property worth US$1400 and school records were destroyed by the fire.
Zambezi was convicted in January and sentenced to five years in prison of which 10 months were suspended on condition of restitution of US$1400 and the other six months on condition of good behaviour.
