Reports say members of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) marched to Luthuli House on Monday afternoon, interrupting an ANC top six meeting, went on a looting rampage in Johannesburg CBD and Hillbrow.
Traffic in the area halted as over 3000 pupils gathered in front of the ANC headquarters.
COSAS demanded that the government address several issues, including a school infrastructure backlog, proper sanitation, need for sanitary towels, proper action against teachers found guilty of sexual harassment, and schools’ failure to account for financial audit failures.
ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule stepped out of the meeting to address the students, but some of the kids took to the streets and started looting stores in the CBD and in the area of Hillbrow.
Looters were seen rushing into shops in bunches and leaving with a variety of goods.
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed the looting on Tuesday morning.
“We have opened several cases of public violence. Police are investigating but no arrests have been made,” Masondo said.
According to Masondo, he was aware of only one shopkeeper who was injured during the incident.
