The South African embassy in Harare commemorated Mandela Day in a different way in the Harare this morning when the ambassador Mr Mphakama Mbete and his staff visited an orphanage centre in the dusty Kuwadzana suburb.
Mandela Day is commemorated every 18th of July.
Ambassador Mbete accompanied by some members of his staff spent time with children with disabilities and caregivers at Number 9121 in Kuwadzana Phase 3.
He delivered some goodies to the institution which looks after children who are in difficult circumstances and
Among the gifts were a refrigerator, toys and clothing items.
Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Mbete implored members of his staff to ensure furniture and other useful materials are given to such needy communities instead of throwing them away.
He implored other members of the community to emulate South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela who committed his life to serving others.
Ambassador Mbete said he will help conscientise other diplomatic missions to come forward and assist the home.
He said societies are not perfect and it is everyone’s duty to assist the young lives.
Ambassador Mbete donated a stove donated by Nyaradzo, clothes from Truworths and South African Airlines, groceries from South African companies, 31 mattresses and sugar from Hullet.
The Rudo Netariro Home is a private house which has been converted into a halfway home for children with disabilities.
