Rusape town council scored a first as they became the first local authority to heed the clarion call to hold sports festivals for its community to be visible in sports.
The new sports policy advocates for local authorities to take sports to the people and the Rusape town council led the implementation drive with a multi-sport festival held at Vengere Stadium where the community took part in seven different sport codes.
“Holding such sporting events will make local authorities develop infrastructure which have been lying idle,” said Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, Dr Benson Martin Dube who was the guest of honor in a representative capacity.
Deputy director Northern Region, Samuel Mashatise noted it is pleasing that Rusape has demonstrated to other local authorities that employees and the community need such festivals for the development of sport.
Organiser of the sporting fiesta, Precious Shonhayi said she was humbled by the gesture shown by the local authority to partner the Ministry of Sport in its efforts to take sports to grassroots levels.
Rusape town council were crowned winners in a six team football tournament which pitted teams like Magamba, Kubatana, Ward 2, Vengere High and Ward 9.
Rusape Stars were winners in netball, while Vengere won the chess category.
Hard Heaters won volleyball in the men’s category while Vengere volleyball club were winners in the women’s category.
Vengere Darts Club won the darts while Ward 3 were winners in a fiercely contested tug of war.
Makoni district has 53 athletes selected as part of the provincial team in the rebranded National Youth Games, an indication of vibrant grassroots structures.
