The road resurfacing project in Mkoba suburb, Gweru had been stalled following non-payment of the contractor, while limited resources also contributed to the failure by Kwekwe Municipality to undertake a comprehensive road rehabilitation venture.
“Delayed payments of the contractor, who was rehabilitating our roads saw the project being abandoned midway,” Gweru Mayor, Councillor Charles Chikozho said during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gweru.
Kwekwe Mayor, Mr Matenda Madzoke also bemoaned the sorry state of tarred roads in most suburbs in the province and appealed for resources to re-gravel some of the roads while road authorities mobilise resources to tar the roads.
ZINARA CEO, Engineer Nancy Chamisa revealed that funds for the Mkoba 5 road have been released and work was expected to start soon.
Delays in the completion of the resurfacing of the roads has created chaos in the high density suburb of Mkoba with motorist creating side paths that have also exposed children to the risks of being run over by motorists.
Most city roads and highways in the Midlands Province were damaged by Cyclone Dineo in 2016.
