The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Cde Joram Gumbo has reiterated that haulage trucks must not be used for transporting heavy cargo as it is the responsibility of the rail sector.
The government has admitted that the advent of haulage trucks popularly known as gonyets has resulted in damages of road infrastructure amid loss of business to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).
Cde Gumbo spelt out that his ministry is set to take corrective measures in regulating the transportation of bulk cargo noting that this will in turn help capacitate NRZ.
Traditionally, it was stipulated that any cargo above 20 tonnes is reserved for rail transport but all hell broke loose when haulage trucks started transporting coal and other bulk loads.
Currently, the government is in the process of capacitating the NRZ.
