Richwood Sports Club this weekend hosted a four team tournament dubbed “Wheelchair Revival” basketball tournament aimed at reviving and uplifting the fortunes of the game.

The sport which has had waning fortunes in past few years due to shortage of players, equipment and spares for wheelchairs has seen a reduction in the number of active clubs in Harare and Zimbabwe as a nation.

A handful of clubs including hosts Richwood, Danhiko, Jairos Jiri, Wolves and newcomers Mutare Mountain Lions are currently playing on a regular basis, although the sport has been featuring prominently during the national paralympic and youth games.

The four teams were engaged in thrilling and exciting tournament, played on a round robin basis.

The teams were a mix of youth and experienced players and generated some exciting matches.

Richwood Sports Club hopes to re-ignite the passion for the game of wheelchair basketball, develop and expose more young and upcoming players.

Zimbabwe Wheelchair Basketball Association hopes to have a team representing the country at  regional competitions and next year’s youth Olympics and 2020 Tokyo games in Japan.
