Retired Chief Justice of Zimbabwe, Godfrey Chidyausiku has died.

He was 70.

Family Spokesperson, Ambassador Boniface Chidyausiku confirmed that his brother died today in Johannesburg, South Africa where he was receiving treatment.

He said Retired Chief Justice Chidyausiku was suffering from kidney and liver complications, adding that arrangements are being made to repatriate his body for burial back home.

Mourners are gathered at number 16855, Runlay Road – off Orange Groove, Highlands, Harare.

Retired Chief Justice Chidyausiku, who had reached his constitutional retirement age, retired at the end of February this year after serving as Zimbabwe’s Chief Justice for more than 15 years.

He headed the judiciary at the height of the land reform programme and defended the country’s position to redistribute land to the black majority.

In 2015, he transformed the judiciary after reading a riot act to non-performing judges, a move which has been attributed to the reduction of backlog in the superior courts.
