A potential health hazard is looming in Mutare district where revelations have emerged that council is discharging raw effluent into Sakubva river.

Incessant rains destroyed a sewer pipe leading to the discharge that has been going on for months now.

Heavy water pollution due to massive raw sewer discharged into Sakubva river is posing a serious health threat as downstream communities depend on the water source for domestic usage.

The sewer pipe from Mutare Farm Prison has been discharging toxic for months and Sakubva water is now discoloured due to pollution.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene has expressed grave concern over council inefficiency and issued a two week ultimatum ordering the city fathers to correct the situation.

City of Mutare engineer, Donaldson Nyatoti said the local authority has already mobilised resources to address the situation saying the two week deadline will be met.

Mutare Town Clerk, Mr Joshua Maligwa was quick to concede there was an infrastructural lapse.

Remedial action will require new pillars to be constructed in order to support the new pipe lines.
