jeremy ractliffe.jpgFormer head of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Jeremy Ractliffe, has resigned from the charity’s board after admitting he secretly kept diamonds received from Naomi Campbell.

Ractliffe who kept the diamonds for thirteen years without declaring receipt of the precious stones only admitted he had the gems after Campbell mentioned him at the war crimes trial of former Liberian leader, Charles Taylor two weeks ago. Ractliffe later handed the diamonds to South African police after Campbell’s testimony.

Reports say Ratcliffe’s conduct  is threatening to raise racial tempers and anger is mounting over what the general population in the country sees as the constant exhibition of the “grab it all” mentality by former white apartheid apologists.

His role as a white man in managing a foundation tied to an anti-apartheid icon of Nelson Mandela’s status has stirred controversy with many South Africans saying his resignation is a welcome development.
