A nineteen year old Bulawayo man who appeared in court for allegedly raping a 57-year old woman has been sentenced to seven years in jail.

Three years of his sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of rape whilst the other four are effective.

According to the state prosecutor Tinashe Dzipe, the accused Mandlenkosi Phiri followed the victim, attacked her, stripped her naked and raped her.

Phiri then dragged the woman to a nearby suburb in Magwegwe into a house that is under construction and threatened to kill her if she denied his orders.

He then raped her on second count and advised her to be silent.

The accused took victim’s phone and left her near a local beer garden. The woman rushed home to tell her granddaughter what had happened.

She reported the matter the following day and a follow up was made which led to the arrest of Phiri.

Mandlenkosi Phiri, however, pleaded not guilty to the two counts of rape that were brought before him.

However, due to the overwhelming evidence against the accused that was brought before court, he was sentenced to seven years in prison.
