consumer basket 03.09.10.jpgSADC consumer groups have been urged to promote consumer welfare ahead of talks to finalise the Tripartite Free Trade area.

Speaking to the Voice of Zimbabwe, the Executive Director of the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe, Mrs Rosemary Siyachitema, said a recent SADC workshop held in Botswana showed that most governments comprising the trade bloc are lagging behind in the formulation of consumer protection laws.

“Government must expedite the finalisation of the consumer protection law which is now with the attorney general as the country is among those operating without the law,” said Siyachitema.

Siyachitema said the crafting of the law will help prevent the abuse of consumers by service providers especially those that enjoy
monopolies.
