Kimberley Process Monitor Mr. Abbey Chikane has applauded the progress made by Zimbabwe in meeting the set Kimberley Process Certification Scheme KPCS standards and expressed optimism that the certification process will be completed in the next nine months.
The commendation by the diamond expert follows observations made during his three day fact finding mission to Zimbabwe under the Joint Work Plan agreed to by Zimbabwe and KPCS.
Mr. Abbey Chikane who expressed gratitude on the level of cooperation by local diamond mining industry stakeholders during his assessment said he was impressed with the remarkable progress made in meeting the KPCS standards.
The monitor who has since left for South Africa is expected to return to Zimbabwe before the end of the month for further assessments as agreed under the Joint Work Plan.
Minister of Mines and Mining Development Cde Obert Mpofu said Zimbabwe is ready to work towards full compliance with the KPCS and expressed optimism that the country will soon complete the certification process.
Mr. Chikaneâ€™s role is to monitor and report to the Kimberley Process as well as to liaise with Zimbabweâ€™s Ministry of Mines and Mining Development about the implementation of the Joint Work Plan which promotes Zimbabweâ€™s full compliance with the KPCS.
During his stay the monitor had a chance to interact with relevant stakeholders in the mining industry, government officials and also visited Marange diamond field.
