back to school 10-01-11.jpgParents have expressed concern over the hiking of prices of groceries in most shops in Harare ahead of the opening of schools tomorrow.

It is the beginning of another school calendar and with a day before the schools open, it was a hive of activity at most boarding school pick-up points in the capital.

Parents who spoke to ZBC News expressed concern over the hiking of prices of groceries in most retail shops, a move which they say has strained them financially.

“Things have become expensive. I do not know the justification behind such madness,” said one parent.

Some also complained over the failure by schools to provide transport in time, which forced them to spend more hours waiting for their children to be picked up.

The 2011 school calendar starts amid high expectations of delivery by teachers following the doubling of the civil service salary bill in the 2011 budget presented by Finance Minister, Tendai Biti.

Despite the expected improvement of teachers remuneration, Education, Arts, Sport and Cuture Minister, David Coltart is on record as saying incentives for teachers should remain till such a time government is able to pay competitive salaries.
