President Robert Mugabe has expressed his sympathies and extended his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the Nyamakate Bus Disaster in which 43 lives were lost and many others were injured.

In a statement he issued from New York where he is attending the UN High Level Meeting of the Oceans Seas and other marine bodies, the President it is with great shock and sadness that he learnt of tragic bus accident Wednesday night along the Harare -Chirundu Highway.

The President said the senseless loss of so many innocent lives in circumstances that could otherwise have been avoidable is heart-rending and most regrettable.

Cde Mugabe said the nation mourns with the families of the deceased and extends its prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured in the bus disaster.

“May the bereaved families derive comfort from the knowledge that the entire nation is with them during their darkest hour of grief,” said President Mugabe.

Recently the President commissioned the dualisation of the first phase of the Beitbridge-Chirundu highway which had already claimed many innocent lives due to road traffic accidents which are mainly due to the narrowness the road in the face of the high traffic on the route which links three regional trade groups SADC, COMESA and the East African Community.
