The Head of State and Government and Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF), President Robert Mugabe has congratulated security chiefs for mooting the idea to start a university for defense and security studies which has now become a fountain of knowledge.

He implored the authorities to open enrolment to civilian public and private institutions for the university to reflect a true national posture.

President Mugabe was speaking at the graduation ceremony of 34 officers and senior officials drawn from the defence forces and government ministries.

“The National Defense College was accorded university status on the 3rd of March this year and the curricula being offered at the university must be commensurate with the newly acquired university status”, said Cde Mugabe.

President Mugabe said he is pleased that the ZDF has benefited immensely from adopting a policy of self reliance which is complimented by the invaluable support they received from China and Pakistan.

34 officers from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ), Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), and staff members form the President’s department, Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Ministry of Defence and officers from Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Zambia Nigeria and Mozambique successfully completed their degree studies after 11 months of intensive studies, which aims to sharpen their skills in defence and national security strategy formulation.

Also present at the graduation ceremony was Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Defense Minister, Dr Sydney Sekeramayi, Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr Chris Mushohwe, secretary for defense, Mr Martin Rushwaya and service chiefs among others.

Three book prizes were awarded to Mr Wonder Ndemera from the President’s Office who also scooped the best team player award and the best individual research paper while Assistant Commissioner Richard Basera scooped the runner up prize for individual research paper.
