Zanu PF First Secretary and President, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa says the ruling party must transform itself to become a party of the future, wield its power with responsibility and ensure both intra-party and national democracy.
Addressing delegates at the Zanu PF Extra-Ordinary Congress in Harare today, Cde Mnangagwa touched on various issues top among them that the party must work hard to deliver economically to ensure victory in next year’s elections which he said shall be free and fair, and held as per schedule.
“We must now be a party of the future, party of prosperity and party of posterity. Remember all successful parties renew themselves by engaging with women and the youth. We must strive for intra-party democracy at all levels for the good of the party. Elections must be conducted at all levels of the party and they must be free from manipulation. Next year’s general elections will be held as scheduled and must be free, fair and transparent,” said Cde Mnangagwa.
The President added that it is now time for politics and economics, not the previous politics and politics stance the party pursued.
“Above all, we must ensure peace in our land. We who are called upon to lead the party must always remember that we are servants of the party and the nation,” added Cde Mnangagwa.
On war veterans, Cde Mnangagwa said “their value far exceeds the numerical value of their vote,” adding that they have a huge task of ideologically reorienting the youth to ensure succession in the revolutionary party.
Cde Mnangagwa paid tribute to the ZDF led by Commander General Constantino Chiwenga, war veterans, the Zanu PF Central Committee, parliament and the generality of Zimbabweans for their resolve that ushered in the new political dispensation.
“The Operation Restore Legacy was about securing the future of generations of Zimbabweans. The people showed that they are united by the national flag and anthem. This should be a national pride,” he said.
The President castigated the Presidential Interface Rallies, whose agenda he said was meant to serve selfish interests.
“The 9th interface rally ended with me being likened to a snake, whose head was to be crushed. During all these rallies, party ideologies were being desecrated daily, party structures overrun, corrupt activities were daily sanitised and the country was violated with impunity. Operation Restore Legacy was about Zimbabwe’s past and present and future which was being threatened by what he called counter revolutionaries and upstarts,” he said.
After Operation Restore Legacy, President Mnangagwa said a new era, a prosperous future for our people is in the making.
Cde Mnangagwa ended his speech by calling for unity in the party, urging members to now forget about their past victimisation before the new political dispensation.
He said he totally opposes tribalism as he is a President of all Zimbabweans.
