The tobacco crop across the country is facing attacks from the Potato Virus Y disease which threaten yields.

The emergence of the disease is being attributed to non-adherence to the Plant Pests and Diseases Act chapter 19:08 which requires farmers to destroy stalks, stems and re-growth by the 15th of May and follow the 1st of June earliest planting date and the September 1 earliest transplanting date.

All seed beds must be destroyed by the 31st of December.

The Tobacco Research Board experts have warned that the continued non-adherence to legislation will result in a drastic reduction in the tobacco yield.
