An Odzi police officer who allegedly demanded bribes from mbanje peddlers has appeared in court and granted ZW$100 bail.

Honest Bhunu (26), a police officer, who is facing four counts of criminal abuse of office for allegedly demanding bribes from mbanje peddlers in Odzi, appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe who remanded him to the 31st of July for trial.

The state represented by Prosecutor Brian Goto alleged that on four different occasions in February this year, Bhunu would pose as a potential mbanje buyer to the complainants and after he bought the drug he would then identify himself as a police officer and demand a bride for him not to arrest the criminals.

Bhunu who received a total amount of ZW$167 and US$10 as bribe was arrested after the four complainants reported the matter to the police.
