The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it will arrest perpetrators of political violence and make sure that the country holds free, fair and credible elections.

This was said by ZRP Commissioner General Godwin Matanga while addressing senior police officers during his maiden tour of ZRP Harare Province since his assumption of the office, where he articulated his vision for the organisation.

The police chief added that the organisation should be guided by section 219 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe which puts the welfare of the citizens first other than personal considerations.

“The ZRP will not hesitate to arrest both instigators and perpetrators of political violence who seek to discredit the 2018 elections. We therefore ought to deliver quality service that is characterised by visible and responsive policing informed by high levels of professionalism,” he said.

ZRP Officer Commanding Harare Province, Elias Mvere explained the challenges faced by the police in Harare, chief among them the traffic congestion and vending in the central business district.

He however said police are committed to fight crime in Harare Province as some people commit crimes willingly.
