Zanu PF DDC 4 has started distributing inputs from the President’s Special Well Wishers Inputs Support Programme to peri-urban farmers, a development that is expected to enhance household food security.
The programme was launched at Mount Pleasant Hall where several beneficiaries who are peri-urban farmers expressed joy at the fund which they said has come in handy after the failure by the Minister of Finance Mr. Tendai Biti to give adequate funding to the agricultural sector.
Zanu PF DCC 4 Chairman, Cde Jason Pasadi said the peri-urban farmers appreciate the gesture from Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe that will benefit hundreds of farmers in the district.
The beneficiaries of the inputs hailed Cde Mugabe for coming up with such an initiative to fully support the agricultural sector.
The Presidential Well Wishers Special Agricultural Inputs Scheme for 2011-2012 is expected to benefit 712 400 households countrywide with inputs worth US$27 million.
Of these beneficiaries, 616 000 will receive food input packs while 96 400 will be given cotton inputs.
The inputs have been put into four categories with the first constituting 10kg packs of maize seed totalling 6 000 tonnes and fertiliser to be distributed countrywide.
