zim maize22.jpgA consortium of farmers in the Hatcliffe area of Harare has embarked on a tillage programme for peri–urban farmers ahead of the 2010-2011 summer cropping season.

Under the programme, the consortium will provide tractors and diesel for the farmers who used to prepare their land manually, resulting in late planting.

The chairman of the consortium, Cde Justice Zvandasara said peri–urban farming has contributed to household food security hence the initiative to assist in land preparation.

Beneficiaries of the programme commended the empowered farmers for helping them as it was costly to hire tractors while tilling manually was time-consuming.

Government has been supporting peri-urban agriculture and provides inputs through the office of the Governor and Resident Minister, Cde David Karimanzira.

Calls have however been made for the farmers to practice environmentally-friendly forms of agriculture such as putting contour ridges and avoiding stream bank cultivation.
