Self love is regarded as maintaining one’s own well-being and happiness.

A local sculptor David Ngwerume reflects the concept of self-love through a beautiful piece made of stone, in a form of a peacock.

A peacock symbolises a positive outlook, which is a vision of royalty, spirituality, awakening, guidance, protection, and watchfulness.

The peacock signifies inner beauty with the Greco-Roman myth portraying a peacock’s tail as “eyes” of the stars. In Hinduism, this bird represents patience, kindness and luck.

Ngwerume says passion for greatness is his wish and every day when he wakes up he looks forward to a positive day being reflected through his piece of art.

According to the sculptor, the colours and the well decorated feathers of a peacock reflect beauty which motivates him.

“In life, we face a lot of challenges and flaws just like the disorderly arrangement of a peacock’s feathers, but the collective way the bird arranges these colourful feathers matters more,” Ngwerume said.

In Christianity, the bird symbolises eternal life and the resurrection because it sheds its old feathers each year and grows new ones.

The peacock is also used as a symbol of vanity because of its beauty and the way it displays its feathers.
