Harare’s Oriel Girls High School held an U-15 girls football tournament bankrolled by a sports equipment company as part of efforts to develop and grow the sport from grassroots level.
15 schools from different parts of the country participated in the invitational tournament at the school yesterday.
Among the schools that participated are Roosevelt, Harare High, Dzivaresekwa 1, Glen Norah, Vimbai from Norton, Chinhoyi High, Kambuzuma, Mukai and Zimbiru from Domboshava, Glen View 1, Chipindura from Bindura, Hatfield and Mabvuku.
The theme of the tournament was: ‘Oriel Empowering the a Girl Child.’
The director of the sports equipment company which sponsored the event, Amon Madzvamuse, said they believe in sport and as sponsors, want the tournament to empower the girl child and ensure a better life.
Norton’s Vimbai High were the winners of a floating trophy plus kit, while hosts Oriel finished 2nd and Glen View 2 3rd and Roosevelt 4th.
All participating teams received balls from the sponsors.
Tournament Director, Ephraim Katongo said the tournament was strictly for girls under the age of 15 and part of a grassroots development programme to prepare for the girls for upcoming national tournaments such as the COPA Coca-Cola.
