nrztrain.jpgAll is not well with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) which is struggling to pay its workforce of 9 000 as the revenue being generated every month is only able to pay 5 000  workers.

Operating with a depleted fleet of locomotives, coaches and wagons, the NRZ is only able to generate money to pay 5 000 workers.

NRZ General Manager, Retired Air Commodore Mike Karakadzai confirmed that at the moment workers are only being paid their May salaries.

Retrenchment is not an option for the NRZ as such a programme will require more funding to pay for workers.

Local industry’s low capacity utilisation has also compounded the parastatals’ situation as bulk goods transportation is normally the railways’ cash cow.
