Approximately 1200 jobs are set to be created through the establishment of a chicken meat processing abattoir in Norton by mid-year.

The abattoir will be established through the Zimplats Community Share Ownership Trust Fund.

Over 90 000 chickens are expected to be processed at the facility on a daily basis, once the structure is put in place.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Zimplats Community Share Ownership Trust Fund Mr Swedi Phiri said equipment for the meat processing facility is already available.

The trust is, however, awaiting final decision by the Norton Town Council which is supposed to conclude a 6-hectare land deal with the investor before production can commence.

Norton legislator Mr Temba Mliswa said he is going to monitor the local authority’s pace so that the process is expeditiously undertaken and the necessary documentation granted to allow the trust to set up the abattoir.

The ZBC News is reliably informed that the establishment of the abattoir was delayed owing to red tape by Norton Town Council which allegedly took time to conclude the land sale deal with the Zimplats Community Share Ownership Trust Fund.
