The reconstruction of Nkankezi bridge is now 60 percent complete.

The news was revealed during a visit by a technical committee assigned to monitor progress of the emergency road rehabilitation programme in Matabeleland South Province.

The Nkankezi bridge that links Mbalabala to Zvishavane was one of the key infrastructure in Matabeleland South that received funding under the first phase of the emergency road rehabilitation programme.

It is against this background that a technical committee to assess progress that has been made so far visited the province recently.

In an interview with the ZBC News, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development provincial Engineer Dennis Mafurira said the Nkankezi bridge project is now 60 percent complete although the absence of experienced local contractors in the province is a hampering progress.

The shortage of equipment and machinery is also one of the key impediments to the rehabilitation and reconstruction works noted the District Development Fund’s (DDF) provincial coordinator, Mr Douglas Dube while the organisation ‘s finance and administration director, Mr Wilfred Kachitsa called for the recapitalisation of DDF.

The committee visited projects in Gwanda north, Nkankezi as well as lower Nkankezi bridges in Insiza district.

DDF Matabeleland South which administers a road network of about 2 000 km has so far received US$500 000 to repair road infrastructure destroyed by rains.
